Internship/Work-Study Opportunities

Thank you for your interest in Community Youth Services! We are proud of the internship/work-study opportunities we have developed and continually strive to provide new and different experiences that enhance and broaden a variety of educational programs.

Internship/Work-Study FAQ

What is the difference between an internship and a work-study position?
The positions are very similar. During an internship or work-study experience, students receive supervised, practical training that will help them apply what they are learning in their school courses.

  • Students completing an internship do not receive pay for the internship hours.  However, some mileage or specific costs approved by the supervisor may be reimbursed.
  • Students eligible for a work-study position are assigned specific tasks within the program and are paid for the time they work.
  • Eligibility is determined by your school‘s financial aid office. Some students are also able to combine an internship with a work-study position, depending upon their eligibility for work-study funds.

What type of internship/work-study opportunities does CYS offer?
Throughout the year, internship and work-study positions are made available for students who are enrolled in a college or university.  Although both of these positions are provided on an availability basis, program areas where internships are generally available include: Haven House, Foster Care, Juvenile Diversion, Resource Development, Independent Living and Foster Care-to-College. Specific information about each of these programs is included in the attached prospectus.

How long do internships and work-study positions last?
Internships generally last at least two full quarters or one semester.  In some cases, interns work the entire year with one or more of the programs.  A work-study position can last from two semesters up to a year or more, and is dependent on your school’s funding availability.

How will I benefit from participating in an internship/work-study experience?
Because of the range of programs and services offered by CYS, we are able to provide excellent internship and work-study experiences.  The professional staff at CYS can enhance your educational program by providing opportunities for first-hand experience in applying the technical and professional skills you are learning through the classroom setting.

If I apply for an internship or work-study position, will I be assured of an opportunity with CYS?
CYS receives many applications for internship/work-study positions each school year.  Because the number of positions we offer are limited, we cannot guarantee that you will be chosen to work in a program.  Therefore, we would encourage you to submit your request as early as possible.

Will an internship or work-study position help me get a job at CYS when my education is completed?
Although it is never guaranteed that a student who completes an internship or work-study position will be hired as a regular staff member, many of our current staff did complete an internship or work-study position at CYS prior to being employed by the agency.  Being hired for a part-time or a full-time position depends upon the availability of a position, specific requirements for that position, and the job performance of the individual while completing the internship or work-study position.

Are there other areas to be considered when I am applying for an internship/work-study position?
As an agency that provides direct services to youth, we are required to have a “Criminal History and Background Inquiry” completed for all individuals working within the agency, including intern and work-study students. The background inquiry must be completed before a student may start her/his internship/work-study position. There can be no exceptions to this requirement! Please note:

  • If you have lived in this state on a continuous basis for the last three years, this background check generally takes one month to complete.
  • If you are from out of state, or have lived out of state at any time in the last three years, a more extensive background check must be completed which can take up to four months.

How do I apply for an internship/work-study position?
If you are interested in working with at-risk youth and their families, and if this meets with your overall education and career goals, we encourage you to complete the internship application available here. On your application, please specify those program areas where you have the greatest interest. You will be given the appropriate criminal history background check to complete, and a copy of your application will be forwarded to the manager(s) of the program(s) you have indicated.
