The new way to give

MOUNTAINS: One card

Haven House, a crisis
residential program for
homeless youth or those
in serious family conflict.

Most of us love the holidays:   being thankful for what we have ... sharing festive meals with loved ones ... slowing down and appreciating the warmth that comes from the kindness of others.

But on the downside, we too often receive gifts we just don't need: fruitcake, a coffee table book,a pair of slippers, a tray  of decorated cookies.

There must be a way of using these same resources but not as wastefully, and for a better cause!

That’s why Community Youth Services is proud

of its Lighting the Way program, an innovative idea for no-waste  gift giving during the holiday season.

Rather than fighting the crowds at the local mall, or buying your gifts online (which takes money out of our community), you can spend your money locally—and direct it to where it’s most needed.

When you make a donation to the Lighting the Way program in honor of good friends, cherished family members, valued customers, business associates and colleagues, you are brightening the holidays for our most vulnerable children and teens and investing in the future of our community.

How does it work?

You make a tax-deductible donation to CYS. You select from one of the three youth-designed full-color, high-quality cards. If you like, we can hand address and send the cards for you, letting recipients know that your generosity is making the difference in the life of an at-risk young person. Or you can sign and address the cards yourself.

Either way, you are adding light to the life of those who need it.

Sarah Lloyd

Now guiding the Youth Employment and Education Services Department is Sarah Lloyd, who comes to CYS from residential life programs in higher education at a number of institutions across the country, most recently Pacific Lutheran University.

Sarah, a native of Kansas City, oversees CYS’s CareerTREK program, which works to support youth in getting a clear vision about their future, and equips them with the skills to make it happen. She also guides the $980,000 YouthBuild program, which is a federal effort that assists youth who have dropped out of high school in finishing their education, while learning employability skills through the construction trades.

Sound Off!

Do you serve on our board? Volunteer with CYS? A current or former participant? Help us spread the word about the work we do at CYS by posting a review of YOUR experiences with the agency at www.greatnonprofits.org.

Yes, you can make a difference!

Looking for a place that could use your help over the holidays, consider CYS, which serves at-risk youth in South Puget Sound, including hundreds who are homeless.
Here are some ideas: Sponsor a meal for a family that needs help or provide tickets for foster families to attend a special event. Consider giving gift cards so at-risk youth can buy things for those they love. Donations of tents, sleeping bags, outdoor gear, blankets, warm clothing, and such will help young people without homes stay warmer and drier in the cold, rainy months ahead.  To learn more, contact Barbara Wakefield, bwakefield@communityyouthservices.org or 360-943-0780 ext. 156.
