The Transitional Housing Program is a comprehensive program for young adults and families, 18-21*, who are homeless, living in unsafe situations, exiting an institution or have been in the state foster care system. Our role is to provide safe and stable housing for young adults and families who are facing challenges, along with support, advocacy and guidance in helping them achieve their goals. Services are designed to assist participants to move gradually and successfully toward self-sufficiency through increased responsibility and the promotion of positive self-esteem, relationship building, independent thinking, and basic problem-solving skills.
This is a support program which makes it possible for participants to work on their goals, complete their education, and find or keep a job. Program participants, when working, are required to pay thirty percent of their monthly income for rent. Half of that amount is saved and reimbursed to the participant when she or he successfully completes and graduates from the program. We also provide ongoing workshops and service learning opportunities in an effort to support continuing education and community involvement.
*Please note that we cannot provide immediate or emergency housing to Transitional Housing applicants. We encourage any young adults to apply and be placed on our waiting list. Realistically, on average, a housing applicants wait time can range from one to four months.
*The age of the applicant can also exceed 21 years old if they meet specific qualifications, which can make them eligible for service through age 23 and can be further discussed with the Admissions Case Manager.
Where do Transitional Housing participants live?
Community Youth Services maintains a number of housing sites throughout the community. They include a duplex, two three bedroom houses, studios, and one and two bedroom apartments. We do our best to match each person with the right living situation. Residents can stay in the program from 18 months to 4 years. This depends on the program, the requirements of their lease, and their active involvement in working towards and reaching their individual goals.
How does a youth get started?
The first thing an interested young adult must do is fill out a Transitional Housing Program application, which can be picked up at CYS on the 3rd floor at the reception desk or you can fill out the application online and email it, or print it off and mail, fax or bring it into CYS.
